Summary
Acute NIV application in the hospital setting has become a growing phenomenon in the past 20 years with increasing evidence of improved outcomes when initiated for the right patient at the right time. NIV is also commonly used in the Intensive Care Unit both to prevent the need for intubation and to facilitate weaning following mechanical ventilation. Studies have shown that the use of NIV may lead to decreased length of stay in the ICU and to improved chance of survival.
